Man Puts Head in Cage to Quit Smoking

This day and age, everybody is well versed in the dangers of smoking, its addictive nature and the struggle that millions of people have with quitting. For those who have quit, have attempted to quit or are in the process of doing so, you know that struggle very well. For the non-smokers or anyone who hasn’t tried to drop the habit, quitting is undoubtedly one of the toughest things anyone can ever do…but how hard is it really?

Apparently, quitting smoking is hard enough to warrant putting your head in a cage. Seriously.

A 42-year-old man residing in Turkey recently took extreme measures to drop the habit. “Cold turkey” doesn’t even begin to describe the method. İbrahim Yücel lives in Western Turkey and has been smoking for 26 years. He has worked his way up to 2 packs per day – and if you’re not in the know, that’s 40 cigs every day (that’s a lot).

After losing his father to lung cancer caused by smoking, Yücel tried to quit several times but was unsuccessful in doing so. One day, he came up with the idea to build himself a cage to wear around his head, inspired by motorcycle helmets. The cage is locked on two sides and every day he gives one key to his wife and one key to his daughter, making it impossible to open the cage on his own. Since donning the cage, he hasn’t smoked a single cigarette and regardless of his desire, it’s because he’s been physically unable to do so.

If ever anyone needed a reason to quit now or (better yet) never pick the habit up, this is it. Smoking is so addictive that there are actually people willing to put their own head in a cage to keep themselves from doing it. Think about that for a minute.
