Stagediving: A Thing Of The Past?

A recent legal settlement may cause stage diving to be a rarity. The band Fishbone recently lost a case and were ordered to pay a fan over $1 million following an injury suffered by a fan after a live show.

A 46-year-old woman was knocked down and fractured her skull at a Fishbone show in 2010 and after a legal battle, just came out on top. While stagediving is an inherent part of any heavy rock show, it may become a thing of the past as a result of this case. With one person getting over $1 million for a single incident, there’s a good chance that you’ll start seeing venues outlaw stagediving altogether, to reduce any possible liability.

Granted just because a venue tells a band not to do it, it doesn’t mean they’ll listen. So the flipside is, if bands choose to ignore venue rules, you might also see your favorite bands getting blacklisted from certain venues for breaking the rules. This is just one big mess.

Let’s hope that this remains an isolated incident because, seriously, who wants their live shows to be that safe? Takes all the fun out of it, right?
